Are a small but expanding team of dedicated volunteers who attend medical emergencies on behalf of South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb).

In an ideal world, every time someone in Crawley dials 999 for a medical emergency, an ambulance would be available and close enough to attend within minutes. Unfortunately this is not always possible. In the event of receiving an emergency call and having no available or nearby ambulance to dispatch SECAmb will call upon a Community First Responder to attend the emergency.

Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club -FREE – Know Your Blood Pressure Checks Event in Queens Square

Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club in partnership with the Community First Response Unit (Secamb) are holding this event

Saturday 5th May @ 10.00 til 16.00

Rotary Know Your Blood Pressure Day is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to help people better understand the relation between high blood pressure (hypertension) and stroke. It is estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the U.K each year could be prevented.

This condition can easily be controlled.

It is better to be safe than sorry. Please have a Health Check with your Doctor before it is too late as you do not want to be one of the 20% at risk.

A key note address was given by RI President Elect Sakuji Tanaka where he explained to all present what his vision was for Rotary in his year 2012/2013. His theme for the Year was Peace Through Service

There followed a one hour open forum during which Geoff Williamson told the panel about the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club and Crawley Happy Times joint venture called Local Help Crawley. He said that this had generated about 30 volunteers so far and hopefully some of them would later on become full Rotary Members. The panel agreed that this was the way forward for Rotary and all clubs should look at creating partnerships with other organisations or media to promote Rotary. We were congratulated to taking the initiative and they advised all clubs that if they did not innovate they would die out.

After the audience we were able to talk to Ray Burman the present President of RIBI. Graham told him about his Fishing Academy, the GDRC connection and how it was helping disadvantaged Children. Ray Burman congratulated Graham on all the work he was doing and went on to say that what was being done with the Academy was exactly what Rotary was all about.

Graham was introduced to Sakuji Tanaka

While District Governor in 2003/04, Burman inspired clubs to support and fund Dream Villages in District 3220, Sri Lanka, forging a connection with RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe’s concept of a DREAM team. Clubs donated US$450,000, which has funded 145 low cost shelter houses and two schools in Sri Lanka. During his year as DG, annual giving to The Rotary Foundation doubled. During 2002/03 Burman met with Wilkin & Sons, manufacturer of preserves, and negotiated the production of 60,000 jars of marmalade with an RI Spread & Save label as a fundraising initiative for The Rotary Foundation. At the 2004 RI Institute, RIBI Foundation Chairman Paul Buyers revealed that the amount raised by the Spread & Save marmalade was US$1 million. Burman has a history of raising money for charity since 1983 – by undertaking endurance events with personal sponsorship – having completed 25 marathons and 158 half marathons.
We asked our friends at Crawley Happy Times if they knew anyone who deserved the tickets and they came up trumps with the following.
Sharon Quinn wrote to Crawley Happy Times saying: Hi.
I wonder if you could please help me. Our little Harry is disabled and can not walk at all. He has spinal cerebella Syndrome. He had a special needs trike which he loved so much. It really helped with the muscles in Harrys legs. It was stolen from his school last night. I wondered if you could ask every one you know if they have seen or heard any thing and if they could please keep there eyes and ears open. I have some lovely pictures of Harry on his trike. Harry loved going on his trike as all the other children at school went on bikes at break time. Harry used to get upset about this so we sent his trike to school . When Harry went to go on his trike this morning it wasn’t there. The padlock had been cut. He’s been sobbing at school. I hope you can help. Kind regards. Sharon, Kev and our little H.

Crawley Happy Times UPDATE: The bike has now been found, but sadly it has been destroyed beyond repair. Sharon is hoping to claim off the schools insurance but if anyone has any information about the people who took this bike from a school which caters for the disabled, please call 101 and inform the police. Thank you for all your help in this matter x

Congratulations to Brenda Burgess for such a brilliant rendition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

We were invited to the Annual Inter-Club Balloon Debate 2012 for the event which took place in the evening on Wednesday, 7th March 2012 at the Reigate Manor Hotel.

The evening started with an excellent served three course dinner prior to the entertainment and there was a quality raffle with proceeds of over £800 going to Rotary charities

The Balloon Debate that followed can have a maximum of five in the basket, no more than one per club as it is an inter-club competition.

This Year there were 5 entrants Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (Played by our very own Brenda Burgess), Father Christmas, Queen Boudicca, Prince Charles, Montgomery Scott Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise

Each Contestant was given 4 minutes to state why they should stay in the balloon and at the end of the first session one person was voted off by the attendees. At the end of session one Queen Boudicca was voted off. Another vote took place and Price Charles was voted off

The remaining 3 contestants were given a further 2 minutes to explain why they should stay in the balloon for the final session. At the end of session two Montgomery Scott was voted off.

The remaining 2 contestants were given a further 1 minutes to explain why they should stay in the balloon. At the end of session three Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was voted off. The winner by a very small majority was Father Christmas
