St Catherine’s Hospice
St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.
For 25 years they have been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and South-East Surrey. Hospice care is based on the belief that each person is more than their illness, and that each of us has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.
This highly personal, holistic approach to care takes time, skill and experience from a multi-professional team. They care for people in the hospice, in their homes and in nursing homes. They also provide training, advice and support to other health professionals.
•Through expert assessment and regular monitoring they aim to relieve pain, symptoms and side-effects of illness.
•They enable people to receive care, treatments and therapies directly, wherever they live, through liaison with other healthcare professionals and by providing 24 hour telephone support.
•They help people retain their independence, mobility and sense of control by providing practical help, equipment and advice.
•They help restore self confidence and well-being by giving patients the opportunity to meet socially, gain support from others in similar circumstances, and benefit from relaxation therapies.
•They give patients and their loved ones opportunities to discuss their thoughts and feelings which can relieve fears and anxieties.
•They help people plan for the future so that they can enjoy life as fully as possible.
•Where possible they support patients’ carers by providing respite care, giving people a much needed break from their caring role.
•They provide open and honest explanation to questions, enabling people to make informed choices and have greater control throughout the dying process.
•They support people as their condition deteriorates, helping families, carers and friends to prepare for bereavement.
•They provide ongoing support to families and carers in bereavement, from simple practical advice through to counselling services.
They critically rely on voluntary donations and legacies and our care is only made possible thanks to the generosity of supporters and volunteers. They rely almost entirely on the support of local people, companies and trusts, with just 16 per cent of our running costs provided by the NHS. Each year They need to raise £4.8m in voluntary income to ensure they can keep providing our vital services to those who need them.

Crawley Open House (The Mayor of Crawley’s Charity)
They are a “one off” charity based in Crawley, West Sussex about two miles away from Gatwick Airport. They are almost exactly midway between London and Brighton on the south coast. Crawley was one of the original “New Towns” which were built from the 1950s onwards. Crawley Open House cares for people suffering from the effects of homelessness, unemployment, loneliness, discrimination or social exclusion.
They do this by providing Drop In Day Centres (shown to left) and a Direct Access Hostel which can be accessed by anybody who needs help, advice or just the company of somebody who cares, emphasises and who tries to understand. They also provide a high support hostel for young people Their base and main Project are housed in a converted 1960s single storey factory building on a small industrial estate. They are very close to Three Bridges Railway Station which is on the main London to Brighton line.
Their address:-
Riverside House, Stephenson Way, Three Bridges, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 1TN
They pride themselves on being a little different to most other homeless projects.
They do not judge or question homeless men, women or couples who approach them for accommodation. If they have an empty bed they give it to them straight away.
They take in peoples pets as well. Why should a homeless person have to give up their dog or cat or rabbit etc, just to get help.
They give couples a double room. Most hostels split couples up into seperate rooms, or buildings
