Brenda Burgess: Praise for those who volunteer
Crawley Observer – Crawley,England,UK
Published Date 15 October 2009

Being the Mayor and having a charity has made me more aware of how many of us rely on charities in one way or another.

There are at least 180,000 charities throughout the country with the majority of ‘employees’ working voluntarily; so you can see how important it is to become involved with voluntary work, whether it’s giving time, money or both.

There are charities who also collect for other charities. The Rotary Club and Lions are two such groups. During the Wedding Week earlier this year, I joined a group from the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club, collecting around the Manor Royal area. Money collected over the two days, was divided between three charities, one of which was mine – Open House.

I really must thank the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Group for the £200 or so collected during this period. If you go to my blog,

Brenda Burgess Read My Day

you should see a picture and details pertaining to this event.

The Lions collected a considerable amount of money for Open House which has helped to offer much needed rest and relaxation for the stressed customers who use the facilities of Open House. A huge thanks to both the Rotary Club and the Lions.

This week I also found a charity I knew nothing about – United Response who have just celebrated 30 years. Apparently this charity is a national charity who work with people who have learning disabilities. Crawley was one of the first places where the charity started.

People are helped to find work, move into their own home and to live an independent and full social life. I attended the celebrations and met some of the people who use the service. They were lovely warm individuals who welcomed me and encouraged me to join in their game of bingo. They were very pleased for me when I won one of the games.

Now people tend to say that young people are not interested in volunteering. Wrong!

This week I attended the AGM for Outset, a volunteer group in which young people participate willingly. Such youngsters are directed to areas where they are most needed, for example, some gave their time helping children during this summer’s reading event at the library.

Apparently, Outset is unique to this area and by offering help to others via young people, they provide the youngsters with opportunities for gaining much needed experience for life skills and future employment.

Well done and thank you to our many volunteers and voluntary organisations.

Why Gatwick Diamond?

We are a GEM of a club for several reasons

Our name Gatwick Diamond derives from the Business Development Area we are in the middle of.

By an amazing quirk of fate we are the 60TH (DIAMOND) Club in Region 1250 and when formed it was also the Diamond Jubilee of Crawley New Town being given the Green Light in November 1947 and also the Diamond Jubilee of the Queens Wedding.

The Gatwick Diamond is an important economic area, centred on Gatwick Airport, situated between London and Brighton.

Its wealth generation in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) makes it one of the first choices in the UK to set up, operate and grow businesses.

By bringing together business leaders, Surrey and West Sussex County Councils, six local authorities and other organisations, there have been major advances in planning, transport improvements and development opportunities.

Their Vision is that by 2016 the Gatwick Diamond will be a world-class internationally recognised business location.

At the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club we are looking for a wide spectrum of talents that we can tap into so as to be able to respond quickly & efficiently to any situation that might occur. We want to concentrate on helping the Local Community wherever possible but at the same time respond immediately to any emergency anywhere in the world that might occur whilst continuing to bring in new members from all walks of life who want to help us achieve this objective.

It is team effort that has got us this far and we will continue to work together to build our club for the future. We will continue to embrace technology wherever possible and we are already listed on the front page of Google under Gatwick Diamond. In the first six positions under Rotary in Gatwick and listed twice on the front page under Rotary in Crawley.

We need a multiplicity of ideas and skills for our club to be ready for the 21st century, and we are well on the way to achieving that already.

We aim to change the Public’s perception of Rotary and introduce a new dynamism. Namely we want a young and vibrant club of all, ages, sexes, creeds & job capabilities that we can tap into so as to be able to respond quickly & efficiently to any situation that might occur, whether locally or on the International front. We already have a multiplicity of ideas and skills in our club but you can never have too many.

We will continue to invite new member to join our team using technology and the media wherever possible to help us in this objective. Our objective is to achieve Diamond Membership in our Club and to become a real Gem of a Club.

St Catherine’s Hospice
St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.

For 25 years they have been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and South-East Surrey. Hospice care is based on the belief that each person is more than their illness, and that each of us has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.

This highly personal, holistic approach to care takes time, skill and experience from a multi-professional team. They care for people in the hospice, in their homes and in nursing homes. They also provide training, advice and support to other health professionals.

•Through expert assessment and regular monitoring they aim to relieve pain, symptoms and side-effects of illness.
•They enable people to receive care, treatments and therapies directly, wherever they live, through liaison with other healthcare professionals and by providing 24 hour telephone support.
•They help people retain their independence, mobility and sense of control by providing practical help, equipment and advice.
•They help restore self confidence and well-being by giving patients the opportunity to meet socially, gain support from others in similar circumstances, and benefit from relaxation therapies.
•They give patients and their loved ones opportunities to discuss their thoughts and feelings which can relieve fears and anxieties.
•They help people plan for the future so that they can enjoy life as fully as possible.
•Where possible they support patients’ carers by providing respite care, giving people a much needed break from their caring role.
•They provide open and honest explanation to questions, enabling people to make informed choices and have greater control throughout the dying process.
•They support people as their condition deteriorates, helping families, carers and friends to prepare for bereavement.
•They provide ongoing support to families and carers in bereavement, from simple practical advice through to counselling services.
They critically rely on voluntary donations and legacies and our care is only made possible thanks to the generosity of supporters and volunteers. They rely almost entirely on the support of local people, companies and trusts, with just 16 per cent of our running costs provided by the NHS. Each year They need to raise £4.8m in voluntary income to ensure they can keep providing our vital services to those who need them.

Rotary UK Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI)

At the 1912 Convention in Duluth, the International Association of Rotary Clubs had been formed with the purpose of encompassing Rotary Clubs outside of the USA.

The Rotary Club of London was the fiftieth Club to be formed.

Rotary in the UK & Ireland

The world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name “Rotary” derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.

On 22 February 1911, the Rotary Club of Dublin became the first to form outside of the North American continent. The first meeting of the Rotary Club of London took place on 03 August 1911 although it was not formally chartered until 01 August 1912.

The extension of Rotary throughout the British Isles was hampered by the outbreak of the First World War.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI)

A meeting of the seven British Clubs took place in Liverpool on 30 October 1913 and was followed by a second meeting on 04 May 1914 in London. At this second meeting it was agreed that there would be a British Association of Rotary Clubs (BARC) with its own constitution. At the 1914 Convention in Houston, BARC was recognized by the International Association of Rotary Clubs (IARC) as a necessary and desirable institution for the extension of Rotary. BARC therefore became legitimate, with its own officers and constitution.

1915 saw the publication of the first issue of ‘The Rotary Wheel’, the magazine of BARC. In the same year, all the Rotary Clubs that then existed were formed into 19 Districts and the first District Governors were appointed. The British Isles was District 19.

BARC continued to extend Rotary throughout the British Isles and by 1921 over 50 Clubs were in existence. During 1921 there was much discussion about BARC and its constitution which eventually led to the creation of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) in 1922

Today there are some 58,000 Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland in 1,845 clubs, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. Its a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow.

The Structure of RI and RIBI

Rotary in Great Britain and all Ireland is administered under its own constitution and administrative unit known as RIBI. However the constitution of RIBI at all times operates within that of Rotary International. The RIBI headquarters are at Alcester Warwickshire with Rotary International operating out of its headquarters building in Evanston near Chicago, Illinois USA.

RIBI has a professional Secretariat and headquarters based at Alcester in Warwickshire which acts as a focal point and administrative centre for Rotary activities Today there are some 58,000 Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland in 1,845 clubs, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. Its a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow.

Rotary International

The main objective of Rotary is service —

in the community and throughout the world. Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”
For further details Read Blog Article below.

Rotary International

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world

Rotary International is a not-for-profit corporation that promotes world understanding through international humanitarian service programs and educational and cultural exchanges. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and others who share its vision of a better world. Since 1947, the Foundation has awarded more than US$1.1 billion in humanitarian and educational grants, which are initiated and administered by local Rotary clubs and districts.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.

Clubs meet on a regular basis, which allows members to build firm friendships. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting anywhere in the world, so there is always somewhere to go, and people to meet, wherever business or leisure travel may take you.

Various Clubs have different emphases, which can reflect differences in size. A small market town may have a Club of perhaps 20 members, whereas in large centres the number can be closer to 100. Some concentrate on local community or vocational projects. Others link up with a sister club in another country to undertake an international project. Each Club decides how it wants to use the resources it has available

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community’s business and professional men and women. The world’s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

The mission of Rotary International is to support its member clubs in fulfilling the Object of Rotary by:

Social Media Comes of Age

Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter not just for Young People.

We believe in using Socail Media to attract New Members.

Rotary is open to people of all Ages, Sexes and Creeds

New Members are the Future of Rotary and we must do everything to maintain that vital flow of New Members to survive into the 21st Century.

Recent surveys carried out show that the use of Social Media Platforms is no longer restricted to the Young.
In fact over 75% of users of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are between 25 and 64 years of Age with the largest percentage being between 35 and 49 Years of Age.

As LinkedIn is a more Business related Social Media Platform it is hardly surprising that 88% of users fall between the ages of 25 and 64 Years of Age with 48% of users being between 35 and 49 Years of Age.

The mix of Female to Male usage of all three Social Media Platforms is almost identical.

If you are over 25 and are interrested ih helping your Local Community please come along to one of our Meetings

Make a World of Difference DVD

Join Rotary and make a World of Difference

Please take a few minutes to watch the new DVD from RIBI.

Rotary Members are enthusiastic, fun-loving and active volunteers who give their time and talents to serve communities both at home and overseas.

These are dedicated people, men and women from business and professions, who share a common interest in helping others.

We’re looking for more men and women of all ages and backgrounds to join our network of Rotary clubs throughout Great Britain and Ireland, to use their time, talents, professional skills and energy to improving the lives of people in their local communities and others around the world.

And, in the process, you can enjoy the benefits of business networking, personal development, meeting new friends, hearing inspiring speakers, having a great deal of fun and experiencing that special sense of fulfillment that comes from achieving something really worthwhile.

If Rotary sounds like the organisation for you, we’d like to hear from you! Simply fill in the form on the link page and we will contact you with details of clubs and open events local to you. Every club has its own personality and different range of benefits so, to help us find the right club for you, please fill in as much information as possible. We will use your name and email when we contact you. We use your postcode to find clubs near to you.
