District 1250 End Polio Now Competition

Thanks for Life – End Polio Now Campaign

Entry form Deadline 10th Jan 2010

We are particularly keen to share with you our project to eradicate Polio from the world and share how your children could very simply help us to do this. When Rotary set out to eradicate Polio in the world in 1985, the disease was prevalent in 125 countries and now remains in only 4 (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria). Young children are the most vulnerable to catching the disease. It is, therefore, vital for children that we eradicate this disease. In today’s highly mobile society Polio may only be a flight away. The “Thanks for Life – End Polio Now” leaflets shown below provides a background to this programme.

Every child in this country receives free immunization from Polio. Our main objective is to raise sufficient funds to immunize the children in these last 4 remaining countries so that they have the same life chances as we give to our own children.

(We, in RIBI Region 1250, have designed a competition in which we hope children of different ages will take part. Prizes will be awarded ……… We are asking each child to donate £1. Every £1 raised will help to fight Polio and save 5 children’s lives.)

(We would be really grateful if you know of any School, Club or Youth Group that would take on a sponsored event or non-uniform day on our behalf. Every £1 raised will help to fight Polio and allow 5 children to be vaccinated. We would provide you with the materials for this event.). Your Children can still enter even if their School is not taking part in the Competition.

Should you wish to help we would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to expand on this exciting opportunity for local children.

Broadfield Stadium hosted an event where the Duke of Gloucester visited Crawley

The Duke of Gloucester, Laura Moffatt MP, Susan Pyper Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex and Brenda Burgess Mayor of Crawley all attended the 50th (Golden) Celebrations on Tuesday the 22nd September 2009.

We had a table there representing Rotary in the Gatwick Diamond Area and had a chance to meet with all the above and were honoured to have our visitors book signed by them all.

Pictures of this event can be found by clicking on Gallery at the top of the page.

This was an ideal opportunity to meet fellow Volunteers and exchange ideas and hopefully recruit new Members

Press Release after World Wide Wedding Day Events 2009

Yet again our World Wide Wedding Day Events are a success.

www.crawleyhappytimes.co.uk have posted an article about our events.

On Friday the 28th August the Mayor of Crawley (Brenda Burgess) joined the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club for its second of four days worth of events in and around Crawley. The events were based round the World Wide Wedding Day and this was the third year Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club had got involved. All those involved dressed up in Wedding attire which helped to create a great atmosphere.

Manor Royal was the venue for both of the walks. On Thursday the 27th August the walk went from the VW Dealer South to the Hazelwick Flyover and on Friday the 28th August the walk went from the VW Dealer North to the Pizza Express
All taking part in the walk thoroughly enjoyed themselves whilst raising money for their three Local Charities, Brambles Respite Care Centre, St Catherine’s Hospice and Open House (The Mayors Charity). The Mayor mentioned that this was a brilliant way to meet the public and she also was celebrating an anniversary shortly. When asked to comment after the event she said ”Brilliant but I am due to celebrate my Ruby Wedding later this year. Thank you. I had a great time.”

On Saturday the 29th August Raffle Tickets were on sale outside the Marmaris Restaurant in the High Street.
On Sunday the 30th August Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club had a Tombola stand at the Irish Festival in Southgate Playing Fields. During the day the Mayor of Crawley (Brenda Burgess) visited our stand and bought some tickets for the Tombola and won a can of Guinness. At the end of the day the two draws took place and the winners were as follows:

Name the Teddy Bear was won by Ticket No 4 Teddy’s Name “Boris” by Sue in Crawley

Trip for 20 to Hepworth Brewery Ticket No 3 Elaine of Crawley

A total amount of over £300 was raised over the four days which would be split equally among the three Charities, Brambles Respite Care Centre, St Catherine’s Hospice and Open House (The Mayors Charity).

Special thanks goes out to Becca Barnes who dressed up as the Bride, the Girls from Riva Hair Salon Jasmine, Amanda and Tia the Bridesmaid (Amanda’s Daughter), and The Mayor for dressing up as the Bride’s Mother. Clothes for the event were kindly supplied by Dickies Suit Hire. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone else who helped to make this a successful and enjoyable event and we look forward to an even better one next year.

What is Rotary Day?

Rotary was founded 105 Years ago on 23rd Feb 1905 and we hope to use Rotary Day to Publicise Rotary’s work especially Humanitarian Projects and the work promoting world peace and understanding.

Rotary is hoping to make the 23rd February an Internationally famous day to be known as (Rotary Day) and hopefully become as famous in the World as Red Nose Day is in the UK.

Monies raised in the UK alone for Rotary exceed £30 Million Pounds substantially more than monies raised annually for Red Nose Day.

All Rotary Clubs in our District have been asked to come up with ideas as to how we could promote this day.

For immediate release

The new Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club ran its first ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ event on Saturday 26th April with alarming results. During the two hour event 35 men and woman of all ages had a blood pressure check carried out by medical professionals. Five had higher than usual blood pressure and were encouraged to visit their GP for further checks.

Madeleine Mills, event organiser, said “This demonstrates the real need for this type of free service provided by the Rotary Club and we will definitely be running it again next year. As a pilot project we didn’t know how many ‘customers’ to expect through the doors of Pizza Express who hosted the event. We felt 35 was a good number but were amazed at how many were referred onto their GP.”

Dear Geoff.

It was a pleasure to see you at the St Patrick’s Day Parade. I was so pleased to hear of the new Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club.

The emphasis is obviously on equality of membership and I congratulate you for this bold move.

The event on the 26th of April looks great. I wondered if you have contacted the Primary Care Trust for support. It may be worth writing to John Wilderspin the Chief Executive of the Trust for help.

Do let me know how you get on.

Please let me know if I can help with recruitment to the club by arranging a visit to the House of Commons. I should be delighted to help if I can.

Yours sincerely,

Laura Moffatt
Member of Parliament for Crawley

The Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club and The Stroke Association are working in partnership for the first time to help combat high blood pressure, the single biggest risk factor for stroke.

One day of free blood pressure measuring will be held on Saturday 26th April 2008 for Crawley residents and workers at Pizza Express Restaurant on The Boulevard, Crawley from 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.

The campaign has proven to be extremely successful over the past five years for UK Rotary Clubs with record numbers of people getting their blood pressure measured. This year we hope to encourage more than 30,000 people throughout the UK to take advantage of this free health check.

Madeleine Mills of the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club says: “We hope local residents will stop by Pizza Express and have their blood pressure measured. It will only take a few minutes but it could help save their lives. The checks will be conducted by medical professionals who have volunteered to take part. All our Club members will be queuing up to get their blood pressure measured too!”

Each year an estimated 150,000 people across the UK will have a stroke. It is one of the top three causes of death and a leading cause of severe adult disability in the UK. High blood pressure is the most important causal risk factor for stroke causing about 50 per cent of ischaemic strokes. There are often no symptoms of high blood pressure so these measurements are vitally important.
